The bacteria were found inside thin cracks in rocks recovered from under the ocean floor beneath the Pacific Ocean. The team which made the finding believes the cracks could host collections of bacteria as rich and diverse as the human gut — roughly 10 billion cells per cubic centimeter (0.06 cubic inches). This is 100 million times as dense as the average distribution of bacteria on the ocean floor in the region where samples were collected....

The team is led by UC San Diego physicist Shelley Wright, and consists of researchers from UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, University of California Observatories and Harvard University. [Read: Scientists discover strong evidence of life on Mars] Researchers said once PANOSETI is fully assembled, it’ll continuously look for flashes of optical or infrared light in the space, occurring at nanosecond-to-second timescale. These flashes can be artificial — supposedly used for communication by the extraterrestrial — or natural space phenomena....

Glasgow is set to introduce a fleet of 19 hydrogen-powered refuse trucks after being awarded £6.3 million (US$8 million) in funding under the UK government’s £23 million Hydrogen for Transport Program (HTP). UK Transport Minister Rachel Maclean said the trucks would form “the world’s largest fleet of hydrogen refuse vehicles” and showcase “how the UK is at the forefront of green transport technology”. The investment will also see the launch of a new hydrogen refueling station and is part of the government’s wider strategy to support the growth of hydrogen infrastructure alongside the deployment of new vehicles....

Headlines announced “Screens are not as dangerous as you think”, “Screens don’t really hurt kids”, “Kids are not harmed by long screen times”, “Potential benefits of digital screen time” and “Kids being glued to screens doesn’t cause anxiety”. However, we still need to be wary of health consequences, despite the absence of strong links between screen time and children’s health. The researchers suggested screen time was not a direct cause of depression or anxiety and was linked to improved peer relations, but their findings came with caveats....

Fighting deforestation Australian start-up AirSeed Technologies uses seed-dropping drones to fight deforestation using seed bombing drones and data-driven intelligence. The company partners with governments, NGOs, and corporations for collaborative ecosystem restoration projects. They’re on a mission to sow the seeds for 100 million trees by 2024. AirSeed has developed a proprietary, innovative and scalable solution for reforestationand re-vegetation that is faster and cheaper than traditional manual planting practices. During an earnings call this week, Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki spoke about the brand’s rather lackluster Christmas and the costs going into the next generation. The interesting part is this: “What is not very clear or visible is because we are competing in the space, so it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time, and depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay....

According to recent reports, Sony is now testing its S-Vision concept car on public roads. At Sony’s CES 2021 keynote the company said it began testing last month, by taking the car on a trip through Austria. The video doesn’t give too much away, however, it’s clear that the car features a host of modern features, as there are visible sensors on the front and rear bumpers. The Vision-S also has rear facing cameras instead of wing mirrors, kind of like the Honda-E....

Both The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported that a federal judge was to rule in favor of the merger today, which would see T-Mobile’s subscriber count swell to more than 140 million to become the second largest mobile carrier in the US. This has now been confirmed by a CNN report published this morning. Despite federal regulators having already approved the deal, formally announced on Twitter in April 2018, a lawsuit pushed by the Attorney Generals of 13 states (as well as the District of Columbia) has kept the plans in limbo....

It’s that time of year when seemingly every tech company publishes a “year in review” where they look back at achievements made on their platform. This week was fitness app Strava’s turn when it released its Year in Sport review for 2019. One of the great things about Strava, security infringements aside, is how it casts a light on the sporting achievements of people from around the globe. Achievements that would otherwise likely go unnoticed....

The company announced on Sunday that it has raised $600 million from Allianz X, Axa, Baillie Gifford, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Sequoia Capital, and Ireland’s National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA), taking its valuation to a gargantuan $95 billion. As the Financial Times noted, the 11-year-old company has surpassed the valuation of Facebook and Uber before they went public. The powerful magnets in common electric car motors do not interfere with the medical devices. Babies learn to talk from hearing other humans — mostly their parents — repeatedly produce sounds. Slowly, through repetition and discovering patterns, infants start connecting those sounds to meaning. Through a lot of practice, they eventually manage to produce similar sounds that humans around them can understand. Machine learning algorithms work much in the same way, but instead of having a couple of parents to copy from, they use data, painstakingly categorized by thousands of humans who have to manually review the data and tell the machine what it means....

Such high losses can be attributed to the sheer number of $TSLA “short-sellers” out there. These investors borrow stock from a broker when they believe its overvalued, immediately sell it with the intention of re-buying at a lower price, and profit from the difference once they’ve been returned. Uber recently published a patent using cameras, mapping, and custom AI processors to detect non-compliant rider behavior such as parking outside designed areas. Uber can then notify users of improper parking or issue penalties. Get free rides for sticking a helmet on your head Uber is not the first company to use AI to control user behavior. Chicago escooter company Veoride debuted helmet detection tech in 2020. Riders upload a photo of themselves wearing a helmet to the VeoApp and receive a ride discount....

According to the streaming giant, Alone With Me is “a personalized generative experience powered by deep learning and your Spotify listening data.” The site introduces you to a digital avatar of the Canadian crooner, who greets you by name. He then judges your listening habits before giving you a quick concert featuring his latest hits. You can also distort his body with your cursor, which feels like the digital equivalent of smudging ink....
