Google’s Nest Hub (formerly the Google Home Hub) is an impressive piece little smart display except for that one tidbit – it might be too little. It’s intuitive to use, and it’s ambient light adaptation works remarkably well, but the small size somewhat limits its primary function as a photo frame. That’s why Google announced the Nest Hub Max back in May, and now it seems we may finally have a release date: September 9....

The update notes for the new version of the Smart Lock app read “With this new update, you can now set up your phone’s built-in security key, the best second factor protection for your Google Account.” What this means is that, when you log into your Google accounts, you can confirm that it’s you via your iPhone without the use of a two-factor SMS or the like. In order to make this work, according to a Google cryptographer, the Smart Lock runs on the Secure Enclave, the separate processor inside most iPhones that handles biometric information such as your fingerprint or your face....

Hunt, also Microsoft Regional Director for security, announced last night that he’s making the website open-sourced so others can contribute to the project and make it easier to find your compromised credentials. He had first announced his intention of making this project available to other services last August. As a first step, Hunt and .NET foundation are making the pwned password module open-sourced. This page currently lets you check if any of your passwords (not attached with usernames) were part of a data leak....

Education doesn’t work the same way for everyone. In the US, for example, most public school systems have programs in place to identify so-called “gifted” children. Unfortunately, there’s no consensus in academia or government as to what exactly constitutes a “gifted child” or how they should be dealt with. In essence, it’s a free-for-all where programs are often invented at the institutional level and implemented without oversight. In some instances, children labeled as highest percentile learners are afforded access to tailored instruction....

Now, some countries have enshrined face mask use in law. They’ve also been made compulsory in Victoria and are recommended in several other states. One consequence of this is that facial recognition systems in place for security and crime prevention may no longer be able to fulfil their purpose. In Australia, most agencies are silent about the use of facial recognition. But documents leaked earlier this year revealed Australian Federal Police and state police in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia all use Clearview AI, a commercial facial recognition platform....
