Four days after the Jan. 6 insurrection on Capitol Hill, a member of the “Not My President” Facebook group wrote in a post, “remember, our founding fathers were seen as terrorist [sic] and traitors.” A fellow group member commented, “I’ll fight for what’s right, this corruption has to be stopped immediately.” Three months later, Facebook recommended the group to at least three people, despite Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s repeated promise to permanently end political group recommendations on the social network specifically to stop amplifying divisive content....

Authorities charged Nashatka, alongside his alleged accomplice Elliott Gunton, with counts of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, among others. The indictment claims that in December of 2017, Nashatka conspired to target EtherDelta to obtain the private keys of its users, as well as other sensitive information, in order to steal their cryptocurrency. It also alleges Nashatka and his co-conspirators unlawfully used one victim’s identity to spoof the platform via its domain name settings, which redirected users to a fake site under their control....

According to documents made public by a California superior court, Rubin left the company after having an “inappropriate relationship” with a subordinate, and allegedly concealed payments about his hefty severance package from his now-estranged wife for several years. The documents were first revealed by Buzzfeed’s Ryan Mac. The allegations detail that Rubin was compensated in secret by Google and its parent company Alphabet following a sexual misconduct complaint. The New York Times revealed last October how instead of firing Rubin, “the company handed him a $90 million exit package, paid in installments of about $2 million a month for four years....

The most eye-catching of the upgrades is a souped-up Motion Editor, Android’s interface for creating MotionLayout animations in apps. In previous versions of Android Studio, developers had to manually create and modify complex XML files to design their animations. The new Motion Editor generates the XML files for you, allowing you to create complex animations through a simply click-and-drag interface. Entering the anti-Semitic term “6mwe” into Pinterest’s search box won’t yield any results but will offer an admonishment: “Pinterest isn’t a place for hateful images, content or activities. Learn more about our policies.” But searching through Pinterest’s site from Google for the term “6mwe hoodie” easily produces dozens of pins for content that clearly violates Pinterest’s restrictions on “hate-based conspiracy theories and misinformation, like Holocaust denial,” content the platform says it has limited or removed....

The latest court document, which came to light today, contains Apple’s defense against both the injunction and the suit in general in a nutshell. Apple feels Epic has had the advantages of access the App Store within the boundaries Apple sets, but has now “decided that it would rather enjoy the benefits of the App Store without paying for them.” It also insists that Epic’s desire for the emergency injunction, which would stop Apple from cutting the other companies access to its (Apple’s) development tools, is trying to get the courts to fix something Epic itself caused: Apple even mentions that Epic’s recent catty move, in which it’s running a sort of anti-Apple Fortnite tournament to coax iOS players onto other platforms, belies that Apple’s alleged antitrust actions have harmed the game: “It conveniently ignores that Fortnite can be played on numerous platforms with or without support from Apple, even as Epic touts that fact in its advertising and communications to users....

Bengio will lead a new AI research unit and report to fellow ex-Googler John Giannandrea, Reuters reports. In his role at Google, Bengio oversaw hundreds of workers and was a strong supporter of Gebru and Margaret Mitchell, who co-led the ethical AI teams before their terminations. Gebru was fired in December after a fallout with management over a research paper she co-authored on the risks of large-scale language models, which are used in many Google products....
